Merry Christmas !! + Photo-Quotes Series #3

Merry Christmas everyone !! How are you guys doing during this festive season ? I hope all of you are having your well deserved break and fun :D

I have to say that so far this year's Christmas was the best I ever enjoyed. Well, I didn't have big parties or presents or Christmas trees, but - it is the first ever Christmas in so many years that I really relaxed and have fun, and had a decently enjoyable time with my family. Not to mention I had a newfound friend in my younger brother and we were both trying to playing his iPad games together hahaha !

Guess what, I'm traveling to Singapore next Wednesday in my much anticipated trip ! I've been waiting desperately for this trip around a month ago, but I'm glad the trip wasn't earlier as it really taught me the value of patience. Well, my "Wonderful Slippery Thing" videoshoot is scheduled to be on next Friday. Yippie yay yay !

Also I'm really grateful as to how things turned out as 2013 is coming to an end. What happened really proved to myself that perseverance really is the key to any nature of success in life. I'm also glad that a vision (a vision that was easily dismissed by my peers) that I had since 5 years ago has transformed into a reality today !! Well the vision came to fruit on the day I performed "Wonderful Slippery Thing" (Guthrie Govan) live at Six Strings at Az Samad's first ever Student Concert.

I just figured out what my next song cover would be - "Work Bitch" by Britney Spears. And I'm going to funk-ify it !! And I would be playing it using phasers and wah-wah and I'm pretty anxious as to how it would turn out given that it is ultimately still a pop dance song hahaha.

Also, tomorrow would be the day I complete my first ever 4-song repertoire. Let me list the songs out to you, "Mr Saxobeat", "The Chicken", "Girl Gone Wild" and "Wonderful Slippery Thing". Yes, 1 jazz, 1 rock-jazz, 2 pop dance songs. I'm really excited as it would mark my first ever solo set hahaha. And to my repertoire, I hope to add other tunes like "Affirmation" by George Benson and "Spain" by Chick Corea in time to come :D :D

As promised, this is the 3rd set of my photo-quotes series !! How do you find them ?

This afternoon I actually fancied the idea where I could consider printing a cosy A5-size photo-quotes book once I have made around 100 to 150 quotes hahaha ! I could envision myself flipping through the pages and there they are, glossy, richly-colored, visually appealing photos one after another. Maybe it would be a reality sometime in the future...

Anyways, wish you the best of luck in this coming 2014. Stay positive and let's work hard together ! Three cheers to better things to come in life yippie yay.

Love ya,

Hahahah I do hope the photo-quotes I did for this post gives you a refreshed visual stimulation & can inspire you. I personally enjoyed the entire process of making the quotes as I am involved in choosing the fonts, colors, layout etc.

Oh yeah, another surprise: I will be releasing TWO (2) guitar videos in January ! Hahaha yes, because I just finished recording Wonderful Slippery Thing by Guthrie Govan just a few days ago. I would be looking forward to the video-shoot in Jan & hope everything goes on smoothly.

So for those of you hungry for more such photo-quotes that features my own modeling photos, the 1st installment is available at this link:

"Get The Funk Out" Nuno Bettencourt, Extreme (Solo Transcription - Guitar TAB & Lesson)

Get The Funk Out (Extreme)
Nuno Bettencourt

Notes on the TAB:
-The start of Nuno's solo makes use of G minor pentatonic licks that are reminiscent of the style of Jimi Hendrix
-In measure 3 and 4, the 6-plet rhythmic value of a 4-note phrase played against a consistent 4/4 time signature creates a 4-over-6 rhythmic juxtaposition that creates syncopation. The syncopation of the phrases resolves every 2 beats.
-To heighten tension, Nuno increased the 6-plets into 32nd notes at bar 7 and 8.
-Tension released at bar 9 and 10 with the 16th note licks that mixes notes from the G Dorian and G Mixolydian modes.

Mixing notes from different scales/arpeggios are really very common in eg. Jazz. During my Jazz studies, my teachers have actually given me tasks such as, let's take the song Au Privave by Charlie Parker, for the improvised solo, I'm supposed to mix notes from the F Blues scale, F7 arpeggio and Dbmaj7(#5) arpeggio just to solo over ONE chord, the F7 chord.

So, the idea is to practice soloing using the different scales/arpeggios in isolation, and then once you are familiar with each of them individually, it's time to combine them :D :D

Notes of the Scales used in the solo~~
G minor pentatonic: G Bb C D F
G Dorian: G A Bb C D E F
G Mixolydian: G A B C D E F

For those of you who are not familiar with the Modes of the major scale, here they are in order:
Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian.

Thus the Dorian is the 2nd mode of the major scale & the Mixolydian the 5th mode.

To bring practice to the next level:
-Figure out the positions of each individual scale throughout the fretboard
-Try writing your own solo lines using notes from the scale
-Try mixing notes from the different scales, in this case the major note difference would be the "B" note and "Bb" note but it is significant enough to give a colorful difference to the sound :D :D
